Set center posts if the shed is 8 feet long or two intervening posts if it is longer. A shed roof that is not stick framed will be built with trusses. Saltbox roofs look like skillion roofs but with an extra short slope opposite the long angled plane like an upside down check mark. A skillion roof is made up of a single flat plane which slopes gradually from top to bottom.

The gable style roof. The easiest to extend would be if the roof is a series of individual trusses at say 16 centres. Probably one of the simplest shed roof designs out there this style of roof is commonly referred to as a lean to or skillion type of roof. Beyond the standard flat roof or single sloped roof the most common styles of shed roof are gable gambrel skillion and salt box.

What is the roof structure. Another advantage that metal roofing offers is durability. It is often used to increase headroom without adding much height. Set 4 by 4 inch posts at each end of the shed and as far out as you want the lean to to extend.

It can be made by bending plywood over ribs or arch cut rafters. Another method is using tongue and groove planks laid over curved ribs or arches. It typically has a single face that is higher on one end than the other. Each of these styles has their advantage both in design and construction.

The first thing to do is to take a look at the roof of the shed. Skillion roofs are one of the simplest roof styles used in shed building. I have found in all my years of building sheds that using pre built trusses is so much easier and simpler then building a shed roof with a ridge board especially if you are building your outdoor shed yourself. Make a dirt floor lean to as the simplest addition to a shed.

A curved shed roof design offers a mix of the flat and gable roof style creating the curve or arch. A well maintained metal roof system can last anywhere from 30 to 70 years depending on which material is used. Depending on where your shed is located the higher end can be fastened to the side of another building such as your house or garage. All of them make a good choice for your garden shed.
